The Alocasia portei, commonly known as the ‘Malaysian Monster’, is a spectacular tropical plant prized for its enormous, deeply divided leaves and dramatic architectural appearance. Its striking green foliage features beautifully serrated, feather-like edges, giving it an exotic, almost prehistoric appearance unlike most other Alocasias.

Native to the Philippines, this impressive species can develop into a towering statement plant, producing enormous leaves supported by thick, upright stems. As it matures, its foliage becomes increasingly dramatic, making it an outstanding feature for tropical gardens, sheltered patios or spacious indoor areas. A fascinating addition to any collection of unusual and impressive foliage plants.

Care Tips

  • Light: Bright, indirect light or filtered sunlight. Avoid harsh afternoon sun, particularly on younger plants.

  • Watering: Keep the soil lightly moist during active growth, allowing the top few centimetres to dry between waterings. Avoid waterlogging.

  • Temperature: Thrives in warm tropical conditions. Protect from frost, cold draughts and Melbourne's winter chill.

  • Fertiliser: Feed regularly during spring and summer to support its vigorous growth and impressive foliage.

  • Pet Friendly: No. Alocasias contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals and are toxic to cats and dogs if chewed or ingested.

Please Note: Young plants may have smaller, less deeply divided leaves. The spectacular feather-like foliage becomes more pronounced as the plant matures. Growth may slow considerably during winter, and plants can enter dormancy when exposed to cooler temperatures.
