The Monstera ‘Burle Marx Flame’ is an extraordinary tropical climbing plant, prized for its dramatic architectural appearance. Its elongated leaves develop incredibly narrow, flame shaped segments as the plant matures, creating a striking appearance unlike any ordinary Monstera.

Named after the renowned Brazilian landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, in whose collection it was originally discovered, this remarkable Monstera is considered one of the most distinctive and desirable foliage plants among collectors. Young plants produce relatively simple, elongated leaves, but as they mature, their foliage transforms into spectacular, deeply dissected leaves with narrow, twisting segments that resemble flickering flames.

Care Tips

  • Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal for encouraging healthy growth and mature leaf development. Gentle morning sunlight is beneficial, but avoid harsh afternoon sun.

  • Watering: Allow the top few centimetres of soil to dry between waterings. Water thoroughly and ensure excess moisture drains freely to prevent root rot.

  • Temperature: Thrives in warm tropical conditions, ideally between 18–28°C. Protect from frost, cold draughts and Melbourne's winter chill.

  • Fertiliser: Feed lightly with a balanced fertiliser during spring and summer to encourage healthy growth and larger foliage.

  • Pet Friendly: No. Monsteras contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals and are toxic to cats and dogs if chewed or ingested.

The precise botanical classification of ‘Burle Marx Flame’ remains unresolved, and it is commonly listed in cultivation as Monstera sp. ‘Burle Marx’s Flame’.
